Hyemi Jo

Director of the Sonmal-Sueo Project

   WHO am I?
I am Hyemi Jo.

   WHAT is my job?
I am working on an extraordinary project in which differences between North Korean and South Korean sign language are compared and shown. Just like how the spoken languages of those two countries are already different, so are the North Korean and South Korean sign languages. For example, in both sign languages there are many same signs that have different meanings, and vice versa: Different signs for the same word. For example, the South Korean sign for "clean" means "new" in North Korean sign language. "Thank you" in South Korean sign language means "kimchi" in North Korean sign language.

    WHY do I work here?
It would be wonderful if the deaf and deafblind people from North and South Korea are able to communicate with each other without barriers.
